Education Issues Overview 2007

This has been a busy year once again in education and professional issues in Victoria. VIED continues to advocate strongly on behalf of its members in the plethora of education debates, policy development, government and employer reviews, and educational policy implementation.

Key areas of union involvement in 2007
  • VELS implementation and A to E reporting - ongoing discussions with VCAA and CECV in respect to the provision of quality support for implementation, including tesource material and professional development.
  • VIT Renewal of Registration - ongoing discussions with the Victorian Institute of Teaching about the key areas of implementation of the new system of renewal of registration taking effect as of December 2007.
  • Teacher Registration and Deregistration - VIEU assistance to members on a variety of matters associated with their registration, including representation to VIT on general qualification and registration matters, and in particular assisting members with complaints and disciplinary hearings.
  • Working with Children Check - working on behalf of non-teaching members to address individual problems arising from the implementation of this system.
  • Leadership and Education Legal advice and assistance, through a number of avenues including :
    VIEU publications, the VIEU Legal Conference, Leadership Conference and seminar program, assistance to individual staff, principals and leadership teams on such issues as disability discrimination, special needsstudents resourcing andodier issues, dealing with violent students and challenging parents, performance reviews and ARMs, professional development and career planning.
  • VIEU Submission to The Review of the Victorian Institute of Teaching which dealt with the appropriateness and effectiveness of the VIT and made proposals in relation to improvement in the legislation and the functioning of the Institute. (September 2007)
  • VIEU Submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Effective Strategies for Teacher Professional Learning. (June 2007)
  • VIEU submission to the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Dress Code and School Uniform. (June 2007)
  • VIEU Submission on the Exposure Drafts on the Education and Training Reform Act Regulations. (March 2007)
  • VIEU participation in consultation in July to provide input into the Department of Education's Corporate Planning process. (July 2007)
  • VIEU participation in the consultation on the implementation of the Victorian government Anaphylaxis legislation.
  • Consultation on the Privacy Impact Assessment of the Government's implementation of the Victorian Student Academic Number and Victorian Student Register (November 2007)
  • VIEU representation on educational/professional advisory bodies, including:
