Occupational Health and Safey Training 2010
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, an elected health and safety rep has a right to take time off work, with pay, to represent their Designated Work Group and to take part in accredited training.
Once elected, health and safety reps and deputy health and safety reps must be allowed by their employer to attend an initial five-day course in health and safety. Employers must also allow health and safety reps and their deputies to attend refresher courses at least once a year and also to attend any other training approved by the Victorian WorkCover Authority.
The Act also obligates employers to pay course fees and other expenses associated with health and safety reps and deputy reps attending training. Employers must be given at least 14 days notice of your intention to attend training.
Health and Safety is the responsibility of your employer, but as we all know, the best protection comes from being informed of your rights and the potential hazards that your workplace presents. Improving the Health and Safety of schools is a key objective for VIEU, which is why we are please to offer you this selection of courses. Both the five-day and refresher courses are WorkSafe accredited, and are essential for all OHS reps.
A leaflet with full information about the VIEU OHS Program for 2010 will be circulated to Health and Safety Reps.
