It’s Time: VIEU Sub-Branch Rep Elections
In February, a VIEU representative must be elected by each sub-branch for a term of office between February 2010 and January 2013. Every sub-branch must have an elected rep in the workplace.
Being a rep is great opportunity to become active within your sub-branch and VIEU. Rep duties include:
• Recruiting and retaining members
• Communicating VIEU information to members
• Providing advice to members who have a grievance
• Liaising between the school and members
• Liaising with the VIEU officer
• Calling and chairing sub-branch meetings
• Keep records up to date
Election Procedures
At the first sub-branch meeting of the year, or as soon as practical, a Returning Officer should be appointed. This person calls for nominations for the position of sub-branch rep. If there is only one nomination then that person becomes the rep; if there is more than one nomination, the Returning Officer must conduct an election.
- Only financial VIEU members may nominate as the sub-branch rep
- Only financial VIEU members may vote for the sub-branch rep
- Principal members do not vote for the school's VIEU rep. They belong to their own Principals' Council and vote for their own rep.
Returning the results to VIEU
Results of the election should recorded on the Sub-Branch Office Holders form and either posted or faxed to the VIEU office. Please do not phone results through as under VIEU Rules, the results are required in writing.

Sub-Branch Committees
Some sub-branches have chosen to elect a small sub-branch committee to assist the rep. These committees are usually representative of the diversity of members in the workplace and share the range of duties required in the sub-branch. The election of such a committee is at the discretion of the sub-branch.
