Reps Training 2011



All VIEU reps in the Catholic sector are entitled to paid trade union training leave for one day per annum, to be taken at a time mutually convenient with the principal. For VIED reps in the independent sector, VIEU will pay the school's replacement costs for reps who attend training.

Initial rep training - starting up

This invaluable course provides new reps with an understanding of their role and the tools and knowledge they will need to perform it.
Training includes employment law basics, including letters of appointment, awards and agreements, and most importantly how to use them. You will be trained in dealing with difficult workplace situations and negotiating successful outcomes, ways to increase union membership in your school and how to encourage other union members to get involved in operating the sub-branch. The training also provides a fantastic opportunity to meet the VIEU officers who will support you in your role.

Experienced rep training - branching out

This course is aimed at reps who have some experience in the role of rep and have completed the initial rep training.
Training is provided across a range of areas including activating the sub-branch in your school, optimising the effectiveness of the consultative committee, and enterprise bargaining, Discussions will include how to handle workplace disputes, dealing with parental complaints, and workplace bullying, A refresher session on relevant awards, agreements and letters of appointment will also be held.
Training will also cover the basics of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and the ways in which the OHS and sub-branch rep roles intersect.

Regional training

This course is aimed at all VIEU reps in regional Victoria.
Due to popular demand, VIEU runs rep training in Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon, Narre Warren/Berwick, Geelong and Warrnambool. This training will be individually designed to meet the needs of the reps in each region. All participants will be contacted prior to the training date to identify specific issues they would like covered. This will provide an invaluable opportunity to get together with reps from your local area, address specific workplace issues and to meet the VIEU officers who are there to support you in your role.
Please note that VIEU will run additional training in other regional areas if there is sufficient interest from members. Rep Forum and Dinner  - Attention all new and 'recycled' reps!

Consider this. Elections have been conducted and you're the rep. You've done some training, held a few meetings, resolved some issues and recruited new members. What's next in your development as the cornerstone of your sub-branch and VIEU? The Rep Forum and dinner, of course! You will have the chance to share your experiences as a rep, learn how it's done in other unions and the critical role of the rep in our sector. There will be sessions on a 'how to' approach to recruiting and problem solving, and an opportunity to look at unionism as part of the bigger picture.
