NAPLAN and My School
A long overdue response
The Victorian Independent Education Union (VIEU) has today welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that they be establishing a working party of education stakeholders, including unions, to provide advice on the My School website.
‘VIEU will be raising its concerns with ACARA and the broader community - that the current use of data is misleading and inaccurate, and that data needs to be presented in a way that prevents the creation of league tables,’ said Debra James, General Secretary of VIEU.
‘The website encourages crude comparisons of schools. We are encouraging parents and the Federal Government to consider the model used by the Victorian Government Report Card that provides graphical representation of relative data, which, while detailed, does not lend itself to league tables.’
‘This is a common sense and long overdue response by the Minister – the real test now is to ensure the consultation is genuine and leads to real change.’
