VIEU opposes League Tables
VIEU, together with other key education stakeholders, has written to the Minister for Education seeking legislative protection that prohibits the creation and publication of league tables based on student and school performance data.
The letter, signed on behalf of VIEU by General Secretary Deb James, calls for assurances that the data will not be used inappropriately, and seeks legislation that will prevent the creation and publication of league table by third parties.
“Whilst we are appreciative of MCEETYA’s desire to put in place a structure and process to allow for a longitudinal analysis of school and system performance, on behalf of our students and school communities, the profession requires assurances that the misuse of this data will not occur.”
The letter also reminds the Minister that “(t)he damage to curriculum provision, students and entire school communities resulting from league tables is well-documented in international research and evidence.”
The IEUA has also written to the Federal Minister for Education on this issue.
VIEU will continue to lobby around this issue and will keep members informed of the Minister’s response.
